Hi, I’m Asten.
I’m an Expert by Experience working with the NHS, where I use my lived experience of autism and mental health to help shape services, conversations, and understanding.
I’ve been in this role for nearly two years, and what started as something deeply nerve-wracking has become work I’m genuinely proud of. My experiences — including the difficult parts — now have a purpose. They help professionals understand the realities behind the labels, and they help ensure that lived experience is listened to, not overlooked.
This blog exists as a space to document my expert work and to reflect honestly on what it’s like to do this role. I write about the work itself, how it feels, what I’m learning, and the moments that matter — both challenging and rewarding.
I believe that lived experience is a form of expertise. It isn’t “less than” clinical or academic knowledge; it adds something essential. My aim is to speak honestly, thoughtfully, and constructively — always with respect for the people and systems I work alongside.
Outside of my expert work, I’m also a writer. I care deeply about making systems more humane, more accessible, and more grounded in real lives.
If you’re here because you’re curious about Expert by Experience work, navigating similar paths, or simply want to understand lived experience a little better — you’re very welcome.
Thanks for reading.
